MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Illinois men’s tennis’ rising junior Kenta Miyoshi successfully defended his title at the ITA National Summer Championships, winning the men’s singles tournament for the second consecutive year.
Miyoshi defeated No. 2-seeded James Connel of Florida State, 6-3, 6-3, in the singles final on Tuesday at the Leftwich Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Memphis.
After earning the top seed in the men’s singles bracket, Miyoshi advanced to the quarterfinals without dropping a set. He then took down fifth-seeded Sean Daryabeigi, 6-1, 6-4, to book a spot among the final four competitors in the tournament.
Miyoshi recorded a 6-3, 6-7, 10-2 victory over No.3 seed Lucas Brown from Texas, a result that saw the Japan native secure a trip to the final.
Miyoshi secured a spot in the ITA National Summer Championships after he won an ITA Summer Masters Series event in Madison, Wis., in July.
