CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Freshman Kenta Miyoshi and junior Alex Petrov both collected a win in the first day of the Paine Schwartz partners $50,000 USTA Challenger on Nov. 13 at their home court, Atkins Tennis Center.
Petrov was the first Illini to pick up a win with a 6-4, 6-2 win over New Zealand’s Kiranpal Pannu. Miyoshi took down the No. 493 player in the world, United States’ Gage Brymer, with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Three other current Illinois players also took the court today, graduate student Nic Meister dropped his match in a 7-6 (3), 6-3 against the United States’s Nathan Ponwithbattle. Oliver Okonkwo lost to Spain’s Inaki Montes-De La Torre, 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Tyler Bowers also lost his match to the United States’ Patrick Kypson, 6-2, 6-2.
Petrov and Miyoshi will continue their run tomorrow, along with former Illini Zeke Clark and Aleks Kovacevic.
Miyoshi will begin at 10 a.m. against Inaki Montes-De La Torre with Petrov, Clark and Kovacevic to follow.
