WACO, Texas – Shunsuke Mitsui of the Tennessee men’s tennis team concluded play at the 2024 NCAA Singles Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Mitsui fell to Jay Friend of Arizona in a hard-fought battle 5-7, 4-6. The Shizuoka, Japan, native tied the match at a 4-4 standstill in the first and second sets but was unable to carry the momentum.
The senior continued the trend of Tennessee having a player earn All-American status each season since the 2018 campaign after making the round of 16. Mitsui holds a 107-29 singles record as a Vol, nearing the top 10 in program history for career singles wins.
Mitsui is the first Vol to make it to at least the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships in two consecutive seasons since VFL Adam Walton accomplished the feat at the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Individual Championships.
