Mitsui Reaches 100 Career Singles Wins, Multiple Vols Reach Finals at ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Tennessee men’s tennis standout Shunsuke Mitsui earned his 100th career singles victory over the weekend as he and multiple Volunteers advanced to the final round of singles and doubles main draw competition at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, hosted by Purdue at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

The top-seeded singles player in the main draw of the tournament, Mitsui reached the 100-win mark on Saturday with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Piet Steveker of Louisville in the round of 32 in the main draw of singles play. He is the third UT player in the past two seasons to reach the 100-victory mark in singles, as Angel Diaz and Johannus Monday accomplished this feat this past season.

The senior continued to thrive after picking up his 100th career singles win, grabbing three more victories and advancing to the singles main draw finals.

Alex Kotzen has also been dominant on the singles courts during his time in West Lafayette. The New York native has picked up five wins to also send himself to the final round of the singles main draw.

Mitsui is set to face fellow Vol Kotzen in the finals on Monday at 11:30 a.m. With both individuals advancing to the finals, they have qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships, taking place in Waco, Texas.

After earning a first-round bye, the doubles pair of Alejandro Moreno and Kotzen have steadily paced their way to the finals of the doubles main draw. The squad had a margin of victory by three or more points in each one-set match they played, and they also earned a 6-3, 7-6 (6) semifinal win over Jip van Assendelft and Facundo Yunis (Indiana) on Sunday. The duo is set to go up against Ondrej Horak and Karim Al-Amin (MTSU) on Monday at 9:00 a.m.

Moreno had himself a successful solo weekend as well, securing four wins in singles and making it to the semifinals of the singles draw on Sunday before eventually falling to Mitsui 6-4, 6-1.

For the tournament to date, the Vols have picked up 15 singles wins and five doubles victories.
