WACO, Texas – Tennessee men’s tennis standout Shunsuke Mitsui earned the second All-American honor of his career in the round of 32 of the 2024 NCAA Singles Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Mitsui became an All-American after a hard-fought three-set victory over Cesar Bouchelaghem of Washington 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. The Shizuoka, Japan, native tallied a 3-1 advantage in both the first and third sets, and he showed excellent poise on the court in both his service and return game to secure the sets and the match.
On Thursday, Mitsui will square off against Jay Friend of Arizona in the singles round of 16. The two competed against each other earlier in the fall at the ITA All-American Championships, where Friend took the match 7-5, 6-1. The time for the matchup will be announced later today.
The senior continues the trend of Tennessee having a player earn All-American status each season since the 2018 campaign. Mitsui holds a 107-28 singles record as a Vol, nearing the top 10 in program history for career singles wins.
The matches will continue to be streamed live for the duration of the tournament on ESPN+ with commentary from Cracked Racquets, and live stats will continue to be available here.
