Mitsui Advances to NCAA Singles Round of 16


STILLWATER, Okla. – Shunsuke Mitsui advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Tennis Center.
 
The junior posted a top-25 win in the second round of the singles draw, cranking out a gritty three-set triumph over Wake Forest’s No. 25 Filippo Moroni. Mitsui cruised to a 6-2 victory in the first set, then narrowly dropped the second set in a tiebreaker, 6-7(1). He fought to win the match with a 6-4 third-set win.
 
The Shizuoka, Japan, native will face No. 19 Ohio State’s JJ Tracy on Wednesday. First serve is slated for 12 p.m. ET.
 
In doubles action, Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz retired their match against Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous Karpenschif in the Round of 32. The duo ended their stellar campaign with a 19-7 record in 2023-24 and an 11-4 mark against ranked opponents.
