CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Kari Miller of the University of Michigan women’s tennis team saw her season end in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday (May 23) at the Khan Tennis Center, falling 6-3, 6-1 to No. 65-ranked Bunyawi Thamchaiwat of San Diego State.

The first set featured a pair of two-game runs by each player to start, as Miller erased a 2-0 deficit by winning two straight games. She was unable to hold serve in the next game, with Thamchaiwat winning three consecutive games for a 5-2 lead. Miller fought off a set point in the next game to get a break back, closing to within 5-3. She jumped out to a 40-15 lead on her serve in the next game but Thamchaiwat converted on her second set point, coming on the deuce point for a 6-3 win.

Miller fell behind 4-0 in the second set but got on the board when she came through on the deuce point, getting a break back at 4-1. Her momentum was halted in the next game when her backhand found the net on the deuce point, pushing Thamchaiwat to a 5-1 lead. Miller’s service return on the deuce point in the ensuing game hit the net cord and was pushed wide, sealing the straight-set win for Thanchaiwat.

Miller, the 2022 Big Ten Athlete of the Year, finishes her second season in Ann Arbor with a 26-11 overall singles record.
