COLUMBUS, Ohio – One of Ohio State’s most decorated players is returning to Columbus. Mikael Torpegaard will serve as the program’s volunteer assistant coach beginning this fall.
Torpegaard was a five-time All-American for the Buckeyes from 2014-18. He helped lead the Buckeyes to 127 victories in his four seasons, including four Big Ten regular season titles and three tournaments.
“Mikael is one of the best three players to ever play at Ohio State,” said director of tennis Ty Tucker. “He accomplished so much in his career and was able to compete in all four Grand Slam tournaments. We look forward to Mikael starting his coaching career with the Buckeyes and believe he will make a difference on the court and in the locker room. He knows what is expected from each tennis Buckeye and he will make student athletes better with his knowledge of the game and his incredible work ethic.”
Torpegaard and the Buckeyes had great postseason success during his time. In addition to the Big Ten titles, the Buckeyes made four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a run to the championship match during Torpegaard’s senior season. Individually, the Denmark native also had runner-up finishes in both the singles and doubles NCAA Tournaments. The two-time Big Ten Athlete of the Year is tied for the fourth-most singles wins in school history with 128 and his 232 combined wins are sixth-most in program history.
“I’m very excited to be back where it all started,” said Torpegaard. “Without Ohio State, Ty (Tucker), Kro (Justin Kronauge) and Schills (David Schilling), I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today. So, it’s great to be able to give back and apply some of the knowledge that I’ve picked up on the professional tour to my own coaching. This isn’t necessarily the end of my professional career, but I am very grateful to have an opportunity like this while I recover and rehab my knee.”
Following graduation, Torpegaard began playing professionally all over the world. He rose to as high as No. 166 in the world rankings and has five career singles titles to his credit. Torpegaard has competed in all four grand slams and made the main draw at the 2021 Australian Open.
