TUCSON, Ariz. – Midori Castillo-Meza has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week for the first time in her career after outstanding performances against Fresno State, FAU and NAU on Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4.
The sophomore from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico won every doubles and singles match she competed in over the weekend – the only Wildcat to do so. At two singles Castillo defeated Katerina Filip (FAU) 7-5, 6-0, and at one singles, she clinched the match against NAU after defeating Sofia Markova in straight sets 6-0, 6-2, extending Arizona’s lead in their series to 25-0.
Castillo also clinched the doubles point against Fresno State alongside Belen Nevenhoven at two singles. The pair went on to finish first at one doubles in the matches against FAU and NAU where the Wildcats won both points.
Looking at the team’s spring season statistics, Castillo is tied for second in singles wins with freshman Reece Carter and junior Kayla Wilkins at 4-1, and is tied with Nevenhoven for the best doubles record also at 4-1. The team is now 6-1 in regular season non-conference play and remains undefeated at home.
They are headed to Honolulu for two matches against University of Hawaii on Friday, Feb. 10 at 2:30 p.m. MST and Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. MST.
