WACO, Texas — The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men’s tennis team topped No. 11 Baylor 5-2 on Friday (Feb. 3) in the Wolverines’ first road match of the season. It marks the third ranked opponent Michigan has defeated this season as they improve to 7-0 on the season.

The Wolverines claimed the doubles point for the seventh time. No. 14-ranked Gavin Young and Andrew Fenty had a big 6-4 win over the No. 3-ranked doubles pair of Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi. The Michigan duo now has two wins over top-10 pairs and is 3-0 against ranked pairs. Jacob Bickersteth and Will Cooksey followed with a 6-2 win at No. 3 against Luc Koenig and Ethan Muza.

Young made it 2-0 Michigan with the first singles win, as the 20th-ranked Wolverine took matching 6-3 sets from No. 115 Grassi at No. 4.

Baylor’s Zsomber Velcz cut the U-M lead to 2-1 as he snapped Bickersteth’s three-match win streak with 7-6 (3), 6-3 sets.

Patrick Maloney pushed the Wolverines ahead 3-1 with his second win over a ranked opponent this season, taking down No. 23 Finn Bass 7-6 (1), 6-3 and is now 3-0 on the season.

Sixth-ranked Fenty sealed the team win, rallying from one set down to take the No. 3 singles match against Marko Miladinovic 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Playing out the match, Baylor got another point at No. 6 singles as Muza defeated Bjorn Swenson in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 5-7 (10-4) before Ondrej Styler topped Tadeaus Paroulek in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 for his fifth straight win.

Michigan will be back in action on Sunday (Feb. 5) when it hosts No. 18 Harvard at the Varsity Tennis Center. Opening serve is set for noon.
