Michigan State Men's Tennis Moves On In ITA Midwest Regionals Action


EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men’s tennis continued its third day of action in hosting the ITA Midwest Regionals on Saturday, with the singles Round of 32 and the doubles Round of 16.

The Spartans had two doubles teams advancing to go with three MSU singles players moving to the next rounds of the Main Draw in Sunday’s play.

To start Saturday’s action for the Spartans was freshman Matthew Forbes, who went up against Collin Beduhn from Wisconsin, defeating him, 6-2, 6-1, to move Forbes into quarterfinal action. Junior Ozan Baris took on Mathis Debru of Illinois. After a tough second set, Baris came back to win, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. 

Juniors David Saye and Aristotelis Thanos were each competing in their own matches with hopes of making it to Sunday’s quarterfinal action. Thanos was matched up against Milos Mikovic of Illinois Chicago winning that match after a tough start to the second set 6-3, 6-4. 

After those matches were completed, senior Max Sheldon and junior David Saye started their singles action. A back-and-forth match for Sheldon ended with a loss against Steiglehner of Michigan, 5-7, 7-6 (11-9), 1-6. Saye competed against Miyoshi of Illinois losing 0-6, 0-6. 

Shortly after, doubles matches started with Baris/Thanos, Forbes/Sheldon and Alazmeh/Rakhmatullayev. After a tough match, Baris/Thanos fell, 6-8. 

Alazmeh/Rakhmatullayev competed in two doubles matches Saturday afternoon to earn their place in the semifinal doubles matches. In their first match, they took on Casey/Pate, winning that match, 8-2. After a short break, Alazmeh/Rakhmatullayev took on Klein/Berdullas of NIU. After a back-and-forth battle Alazmeh/Rakhmatullayev defeated the Huskies’ duo, 8-4. 

Sheldon/Forbes tangled with Miyoshi/Debru of Illinois, and the Spartans won that match, 8-6. A quick break later, the MSU duo took on Zhang/Corsillo from Notre Dame. When the dust settled after the hard-fought battle, Sheldon/Forbes emerged victorious at 8-5.
