Michigan State Men’s Tennis Concludes Successful Weekend at Fighting Irish Mini Duals

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State men’s tennis ended the weekend 2-0 against Louisville in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Mini Duals on Sunday to conclude the three-day tournament.

Freshman Mitchell Sheldon started out his weekend in a doubles match with fellow freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev going up against Steiglehner/Oral from Michigan. The pair took down the pair in a quick match, 6-4.

In their second doubles match, Sheldon/Rakhmatullayev competed against Thompson/Maigimay from Notre Dame and lost that match, 3-6. The Spartan pair fought against Nad/Llornes from Notre Dame, winning 6-4. They lost as a team to Magimay/Thompson 0-3 but beat the team of Nad/Llornes 2-1 to end their time in the doubles tournament.

While the doubles matches were taking place, single matches were also going on.

Sheldon took on Oral from Michigan, winning that match in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7. Saturday started with Sheldon competing against Magimay from Notre Dame. Starting out the first set down, Sheldon came back in the second set but fell in the final set, 1-6, 6-4, 7-10. In his next match, he took on Llornes from Notre Dame, winning 6-4, 5-7, 10-3.

To finish out the weekend, Sheldon competed against Pena from Louisville, beating him in a tough battle, 7-6, (10-4), 7-5. That win, as well as Rahkmatullayev against Mayew, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5, put the Spartans up 2-0, so no doubles match was necessary.

Rahkmatullayev started his time in the tournament going up against Striglehner from Michigan, winning that match, 6-3, 7-5. Saturday’s match started out rocky for Rahkmatullayev who played Thompson and Nad from Notre Dame. Rahkmatullayev lost his match against Thompson, 2-6, 7-6 (13-15). On Sunday, Rahkmatullayev competed against Mayew from Louisville, winning 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.

The Spartans will head back home and prepare for Big Indoor Championships, ITA Conference Masters and ITA Sectionals, which all take place next weekend, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 7-10.
