CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s tennis team started the fall season off strong as freshman Marko Mesarovic and junior Maxwell Smith earned singles wins on the first day of the Wake Forest Invitational.
“It was a good first day for the group to see how we measured up against the competition at the beginning of fall. Marko and Max both had a great competitive performance. Looking forward to tomorrow’s challenge and to see if our guys can take a positive step in the right direction and implement what we are striving for,” Head Coach Brandon Wagner said.
In his first career singles win in a Tiger uniform, Mesarovic was able to take down Texas Tech’s Lorenzo Esquici in two quick sets (6-3, 6-4).
Picking up his 20th career singles win, Smith downed Cornell’s Felipe Pinzon in two sets (6-4, 6-0) as the junior didn’t allow Pinzon to pick up a single point in the second set.
The Tigers will return for day two of the Wake Forest Invitational tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.; competing alongside Clemson is Wake Forest, Tennessee, Cornell, Michigan State, Columbia and Texas Tech.
