EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan State men’s tennis team returns to East Lansing this weekend, hosting Ball State on Friday, Feb. 3. Friday’s match will be held in conjunction with MSU women’s tennis in a full-day celebration of the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. Both MSU men’s and women’s tennis teams will be using commemorative rackets in honor of the day, as well as in support of National Girls and Women in Sports Day held on Feb. 1.

MSU heads comes into the weekend having dropped their third dual of the season last weekend at Alabama, in what was a 7-0 sweep for the Crimson Tide. The Spartans had a few bright spots on the weekend, taking one doubles match and pushing three singles matches to a super tiebreaker after Alabama had already clinched the match.
In doubles, the pairing of fifth-year senior Anthony Pero and junior Reed Crocker remained undefeated this season with a decisive 6-2 victory over Alabama’s Joao Ferreira and Zach Foster. In singles, Spartan freshmen David Saye and Ozan Baris lost their matches in the super tiebreaker, while sophomore Max Sheldon’s match also went to the super tiebreaker set. Sheldon eventually fell to No. 35 Enzo Aguiard, 10-5. Pero moved to 2-2 in singles play, falling to No. 96 Roan Jones in straight sets. Pero’s two losses have both come to ranked opponents this season.
Ball State hits the road after suffering its first loss of the season to Indiana on Jan. 29, having won their previous two matches to start the spring over Eastern Illinois and Illinois State. The Cardinals, having dropped the doubles point against Indiana, fought hard for two singles victories in their eventual 5-2 loss. Senior Vince Orlando and freshman Jacks Lancaster earned their second wins of the season, defeating Indiana’s Luka Vukovic in a super tiebreaker set and Jagger Saylor in straight sets, respectively.
Michigan State leads the series against Ball State, 21-10, and has won the last 15 duals against the Cardinals. The last time Ball State defeated MSU was Feb. 8, 2006 in what was a 4-3 win for the Cardinals in East…
