Men's Tennis Prepares to Close Out Weekend of Play


SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Utah men’s tennis program wrapped up play at the ITA Fall National Championships this afternoon.

During doubles play, the Utah team of Berk Bugarikj and Patrik Trhac competed against TCU’s Alexander Jong and Lui Maxted in the semifinal round. Despite their efforts to take the second set, the Utah team lost the match with final score 6-4, 7-6(2).

 

LAS VEGAS – Utah competitors at the Easley Memorial taking place at UNLV closed out their second day of play this afternoon.

During doubles play, Michael Blando and Jayson Blando defeated NAU’s Dominik Buzonics and Alex Groves in an 8-2 match. The Utah duo then advanced to the semifinal round for doubles but lost because of a walkover. Teammates Rian Ta and Mateo Julio faced Piotr Galus and Maikel De Boes from NAU but dropped the match 8-4.

As the competition moved into single play, the Utes had some challenging matches. In the Flight 1 draw, Mateo Julio played Jonathan Da Silva from GCU and defeated the opponent 6-3, 6-4. In the same draw, J. Blando faced Dusan Rsovac from host UNLV. After dropping the first set and completely sweeping the opponent in the second set, J. Blando pushed the match into a third. Blando unfortunately gave up the victory resulting in a 6-4, 0-6-10-6 win for the Rebels.

Play will continue at UNLV on Sunday, Nov. 6, as the Utah team continues competition in Flight 1 singles play.
