Men's Tennis Hosts Portland Saturday


The UCLA men’s tennis team (3-1) returns to action Saturday, when it welcomes Portland (2-1) to Los Angeles Tennis Center for a 1 p.m. PT match. The Bruins are undefeated at home in the early campaign having beaten Hawai’i (Jan. 20) and then-No. 19 Pepperdine (Jan. 21) in back-to-back season-opening contests.

LAST TIME OUT

No. 25 UCLA dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 7 USC Sunday in an ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. With Patrick Zahraj of the Bruins nearing a win of his own, Ryan Colby clinched the overall victory on Court 6. UCLA defeated Memphis 4-0 Saturday, Jan. 28 to claim a spot in the championship contest. A sweep of the top three courts, including the clinching win by Giacomo Revelli, keyed the overall victory. Zahraj and Alexander Hoogmartens were also triumphant on the singles courts for the Bruins. The Tigers were unable to pick up a set.

UCLA VS. PORTLAND

UCLA holds an all-time record of 2-0 versus Portland on the tennis courts, outscoring the Pilots by a 13-1 margin. In the most recent meeting, in 2021, the Bruins registered a 7-0 win at Los Angeles Tennis Center. Evan Zhu clinched the victory on the top court

BLAME IT ON THE HOOGIE

Each of Alexander Hoogmartens’ most recent four wins has come versus an opponent ranked in the top 50 of the ITA National Singles Rankings. He is 6-3 overall against nationally-ranked foes during the 2022-23 season. Hoogmartens’ four latest singles victories have also come in straight sets, starting when he beat No. 43 Trey Hilderbrand of Texas A&M 6-3, 6-2 (Jan. 13) at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Thousand Oaks, Calif. To start the dual-match campaign, Hoogmartens has knocked off No. 41 Andre Ilagan of Hawai’i (Jan. 20 – 6-4, 6-1), Daniel De Jonge of Pepperdine (Jan. 21 – 6-1, 6-3) and Pablo Alemany of Memphis (Jan. 28 – 6-1, 6-4).

HOOGMARTENS HONORED BY PAC-12
