Men’s tennis falls 4-1 to Gonzaga

Forth Worth, Texas – The Utah men’s tennis program wrapped up the ITA Kickoff Weekend today with a match against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. After dropping the doubles point, the Utes looked to singles play for the win. However, the team was unable to secure the necessary matches and lost 4-1 to the Bulldogs.

The Utes started off the day with some tough doubles competition. On court one, Berk Bugarikj and Patrik Trhac fell to the Bulldog tandem 6-4. The Utes had hope on court two where Geronimo Espin Busleiman and Franco Capalbo were controlling their match 5-3. However, court three fell 6-4, awarding the Bulldogs with their first point and leaving the match on court two unfinished.

As the match moved to singles, the Utah men looked for the win in their individual matches. On court four, Bugarikj fought through into a third set after securing the first and dropping the second. Despite his effort, he fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to Bulldog Matt Hollingworth. No. 29-ranked Espin Busleiman dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match against his opponent in the No. 1 spot. Setting the Bulldogs up to their third point. Utah’s Capalbo secured the team’s first and only point as he defeated Arthus de la Bassetiere 7-6, 6-2.

The Utes faced the competition with strength, but unfortunately dropped the match on court three 6-4, 7-6(6-4) allowing Gonzaga to secure their final point. The matches on court five and six were unfinished.

UP NEXT

The Utes will return home for another double-header next weekend. The squad will face Cal Poly on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 12 p.m. MT at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center….
