WACO, Texas – A pair of Tennessee men’s tennis standouts, Shunsuke Mitsui and Alex Kotzen, are set to compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, running from Nov. 19-24 and hosted by Baylor University at the Hurd Tennis Center.
The individual championships, held separately from the spring team championships for the first of two years in a pilot program, will be streamed live on ESPN+ with commentary from Cracked Racquets.
Tournament action begins with the first round of singles on Tuesday morning. The field consists of 64 total players, each earning qualifications through various fall ITA events. Each draw will advance one round per day, culminating in the crowning of champions on Sunday, Nov. 24.
Alex Kotzen will begin his journey at 5:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday against No. 72 Aristotelis Thanos of Michigan State. The New York native has made a statement in his first matches as a Vol, posting a 6-2 singles mark on the year to date. The 34th-ranked singles player in the country, Kotzen secured a spot in the Individual Championships during the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, recording four consecutive wins leading to an appearance in the singles final.
No. 10 Shunsuke Mitsui is set to face off in the first round against No. 85 Connor Van Schalkwyk of Old Dominion on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ET. The senior has put together one of the most accomplished careers in recent Tennessee men’s tennis history, and this fall he’s only continued to impress. Mitsui earned his qualification for the Individual Champions via the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, and he has recorded a 13-3 singles mark on the year so far.
Last year at the NCAA Individual Championships, Mitsui reached the round of 16 in the singles draw, picking up two ranked wins in the process.
