SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Michigan State men’s tennis hits the road to take on Notre Dame on Monday, Feb. 27 in South Bend.
The Spartans face the Fighting Irish at 4 p.m. Live scoring and streaming will be available on MSUSpartans.com.
The Spartans head into the match at 4-4, having won their last match at home against Drake, 4-3. The Spartans rallied past the Bulldogs in an emotional match that was originally scheduled for Feb. 15 but was rescheduled following the mass shooting on the East Lansing campus on Monday, Feb. 13.
Having dropped the doubles point, the Spartans took two quick singles points. Sophomore Graydon Lair picked up his first singles win of the season, while sophomore Luke Baylis picked up his fourth win of the season. After Drake took the lead following wins at the No. 6 and No. 2 positions, freshmen Max Sheldon and Ozan Baris won their matches in three sets to give the Spartans the 4-3 win.
Notre Dame, ranked 37th in the ITA Team Rankings, enter Monday’s match at 7-4 after dropping a 7-0 decision at No. 4 Ohio State on Feb. 25.
Baris and Sheldon are the lone Spartans ranked in this week’s ITA Division I Men’s Collegiate Tennis rankings posted on Feb. 21. Baris slid down to No. 52 in singles after picking up his second win of the season against No. 68 Jeremy Schifris of Drake last weekend. The pairing of Sheldon and Baris jumped 11 spots to No. 29 after picking up a ranked win against Louisville’s Fabien Salle and Natan Rodrigues who were ranked No. 14 at the time. Baris and Sheldon’s doubles match against Drake went unfinished.
Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 54-31, including a 30-14 record in South Bend. The Spartans and the Fighting Irish will square off in dual match play for the first time since March 1, 2019 in what was a 5-2 home victory for Notre Dame.
Up next, the Spartans host Western Michigan on Friday, March 3 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
