Men's Tennis Announces Fall Slate

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State’s men’s tennis team unveiled its fall schedule on Thursday with up to seven tournaments to begin this year’s slate.

Matt Roberts‘ Bulldogs are set to open the fall on Sept. 11 as they head to Illinois to participate in in the ITF Champaign 15K before traveling to Wisconsin for the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Sept. 22-24.

From there, MSU is scheduled for the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma from Sept. 30-Oct. 8. The team will then venture across the Alabama state line to Auburn for ITA Southern Regionals on Oct. 12-16 in hopes of qualifying for the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, California on Nov. 1-5.

Nemanja Malesevic and Carles Hernandez both represented the Bulldogs in the ITA National Fall Championships last season with Malesevic competing in both singles and doubles.

Several Bulldogs are also slated to compete at the ITF Tallahassee 15K in Florida on Oct. 22-30 and at the Georgia Tech Invite on Nov. 3-5 to close out the fall calendar.

State returns five letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 21-8 overall and reached the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championships this past spring. It was the fourth time that the Bulldogs have been to the Round of 16 or beyond in the past five years.

“I feel like we picked up right where we left off really well,” Roberts said. “When you look at the talent that the new guys – Marshall Landy, Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes, Radomir Tomic and Dusan Milanovic – have, they’re pushing some of the older guys. We’re excited about the fall schedule and will hopefully get some guys into Nationals and some more ATP points.”

Mississippi State brings back the top three players from the top of its singles lineup as well as its headlining doubles tandem in Malesevic and Michal Novansky, who were ranked 14th in the ITA Preseason Rankings earlier this week.

Also ranked were the doubles duo of Hernandez and Milanovic at No. 22. In singles, Milanovic, a junior transfer from Presbyterian, was the highest-ranked Bulldog at No. 36. Malesevic earned a No. 46 ranking while Hernandez and Petar Jovanovic came in at No. 60 and 68 respectively.
