TEMPE, Ariz. — Sun Devil Women’s Tennis head coach Sheila McInerney and assistant coach Matt Langley were named the ITA’s Southwest Regional head coach and assistant coach of the 2021-22 season, the organization announced Tuesday.
It is the second time McInerney, who also received Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors for this season, has earned this award, a feat she last accomplished in 2016. It marks the second time in Langley’s eight-year stint he’s been tabbed as the region’s assistant coach of the year (2018).

Maneuvering through a 25-match spring with a roster of just seven – which dipped to just six healthy players for a six-week stretch in the middle of the season – was a masterclass effort from both McInerney and Langley. They guided the Sun Devils to an 18-win campaign, their most wins in a single-season since 2016, en route to a 34th consecutive NCAA Tournament.
In April, the Sun Devils upset USC and top-ranked Cal on consecutive days in the Pac-12 Tournament to reach the final for the first time in program history.
The Sun Devils qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships, as Domenika Turkovic and Patricija Spaka were one of 32 duos selected to compete.
The 2022 season also saw McInerney net career win No. 550 after upsetting No. 12 Cal on April 1 in Tempe.
Alongside one another since 2015, the McInerney-Langley duo have guided the Sun Devils to the NCAA Team Championships in each season and will return all seven on this year’s roster in 2022-23.
The two will now be up for their respective awards on the national stage after winning it at the regional level. The ITA is set to announce national award winners on Monday, June 13.
