SEATTLE – Erika Matsuda has been named to the 2025 Big Ten Women’s Tennis Players to Watch List, the conference announced Monday.
The list features 18 players and is selected by the conference head coaches.
Matsuda, a junior from Yokohama, Japan, played No. 1 singles for the Huskies last season, going 9-10 in dual matches and earning 2024 All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention.
She was also named to the 2023 All-Pac-12 Second Team her freshman season after going 19-10 overall and 15-6 in dual play primarily at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Matsuda recorded two 7-5 records at No. 2 doubles with both Sarah-Maude Fortin and Dariya Detkovskaya last season.
“I’ve seen very few student-athletes mature and develop as much as Erika has both on and off the court in her two years as a Husky,” said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. “Erika has committed herself even more this year to her improvement. She has become a leader and wants to take her game and this program to the next level. I have no doubt that this will be a breakout year for her, and I am excited to see what she does over the course of this season and how she continues to work and lead the team. Her best is certainly ahead of her.”
Among the list are 2024 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, All-Conference selection and recent NCAA Singles qualifier Luciana Perry of Ohio State, USC’s Grace Piper, who earned bids to NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in the fall and also earned All-Conference recognition in 2024, Michigan’s Julie Fliegner who in the fall, became the second player in Wolverine program history to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship and UCLA’s Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer who qualified for NCAA Singles competition in the fall.
A trio of freshmen from Northwestern, Penn State and Purdue are also featured on the preseason watch list.
