Martinez Earns First Career Win as Illini Fall to Georgia Tech

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois women’s tennis fell to Georgia Tech, 6-1, on Friday from the Atkins Tennis Center. The Yellow Jackets were ranked 25th a week prior to the meeting and are still receiving votes in the poll at the time of the match.

Illinois owns a 2-2 record following Friday’s result while Georgia Tech improved to 3-1.

Doubles play finished in sequential order with Georgia Tech earning the point after Kate Duong and Megan Heuser were the first off the courts earning a 6-1 win. GT took No. 2 doubles 6-4 and No. 3 by a 7-6 (7) decision.

Duong and Heuser are now 3-1 in dual doubles action.

Georgia Tech won all six first sets in singles play, however, the Illini fired back and won five of six second sets as all but No. 3 would go to a third set.

The Yellow Jackets would go up 2-0 in the match with a straight-set victory on court 3.

Illini freshman Violeta Martinez would be the next to finish as she earned her first career victory. Martinez took the No. 6 singles decision 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to pull Illinois within 2-1 in the match.

No. 2 singles wrapped next in the lone battle of ranked individuals in the match. GT’s No. 111 Kylie Bilchev defeated No. 70 Ashley Yeah of the Illini.

Play at No. 5 singles would secure the match for Georgia Tech. Kasia Treiber split a pair of 7-5 sets before falling 6-3 in the third frame.

All matches would finish as No. 4 singles would be next off before the top court soon followed. Heuser battled No. 104 Alejandra Cruz, dropping a 7-3 tiebreaker in set one before winning set two 6-3 to even it up. Cruz would earn the…
