Machalova Advances to NCAA Round of 32 with Straight-Set Victory


URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Ole Miss women’s tennis’ Sabina Machalova advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships on Monday, defeating Ohio State’s No. 41 Isabelle Boulais 7-5, 6-3.
 
No. 42 Machalova controlled her opening round opponent, Ohio State’s Boulais, to the two of a two-set victory in NCAA Singles Championships Round of 64. Machalova earned her first individual NCAA tournament victory with the win.
 
Machalova got ahead early in the first set, breaking Boulais’ serve to go up 4-2. After an exchange of breaks, Machalova pushed her lead to 5-3. Boulais rallied back to tie the opening set 5-5. Machalova then held serve and broke Boulais once again to win the first set, 7-5.
 
Machalova and Boulais battled head-to-head to begin the second set, deadlocked at 3-3 through the first six games played. The Rebel then kicked it into an extra gear, winning three straight games to take the second set, 6-3, and win the match.
 
With the win, Machalova improved to 23-12 on the season and 11-8 versus ITA ranked opponents.
 
Machalova advances to the NCAA Singles round of 32 tomorrow. She next faces North Carolina’s No. 51 Carson Carson Tanguilig. Tangullig defeated Pepperdine’s Daria Frayman, the No. 4 overall seed in the individual tournament, in the first round. The time of the match will be announced prior to the start of tomorrow’s matches.
