Ma Runner-Up at ITA Northwest Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Connie Ma finished as runner-up to highlight a busy five days of tennis at the ITA Northwest Regionals. Hosting the event at Taube Family Tennis Stadium for the 16th straight time, the Cardinal featured nine players in singles and four doubles pairs.

Ma, the event’s champion as a freshman in 2021, was seeded third and met No. 6 seed Hannah Viller Moeller of California in Tuesday’s final. In a match that lasted three hours and 18 minutes, Viller Moeller prevailed, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (6). By virtue of their performances, Ma and Viller Moeller have qualified for the season-ending ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego from Nov. 1-5.

Ma made the final by knocking off teammate Valencia Xu in three sets in a Monday semifinal, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Seeded ninth, Xu’s run at Taube included wins over top-seeded and No. 47-ranked Jessica Alsola [2-6, 6-2, 6-0] and eighth-seeded Mao Mushika [6-3, 7-6 (1)]. The No. 2 seed, Alexandra Yepifanova also made Monday’s singles semis, but was ousted by Viller Moeller, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles, the third-seeded pair of Ma and Yepifanova advanced to the semifinals before dropping a tight match to Viller Moeller and Mushika, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 1-0 (7)
