EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State women’s tennis player Liisa Vehviläinen was named a Big Ten Player to Watch entering the spring of 2025 season, announced by the conference on Monday.
Vehviläinen is the Spartans’ lone senior on the roster. A native of Turku, Finland, Vehviläinen went 3-4 in fall play, with limited action due to an injury. She capped her fall by winning two matches in the MSU Spartan Invite, Nov. 1-3.
Last season, Vehviläinen finished the regular season with an even 11-11 singles mark, ranking third on the team with eight singles victories in dual-match play. She split time on the top three courts, posting a 4-3 record on courts two and three. Vehviläinen also logged seven doubles victories, including teaming with Ayshe Can to knock off Iowa’s No. 81-ranked Daianne Hayashida and Vipasha Mehra.
Vehviläinen and the Spartans open the 2025 portion of their schedule on Friday, Jan. 17 at Spokane, Washington, taking on Gonzaga, then play Washington State on Sunday, Jan. 19, also in Spokane. MSU hosts Xavier on Friday, Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. at the MSU Tennis Center.
