Lazo Earns First Victory As A Bulldog


TUSCALOOSA, Ala., – Mississippi State men’s tennis opened the ITA Southern Regional with a win on Thursday morning as Patrick Lazo picked up his first victory for the Bulldogs.

Lazo, a graduate transfer from Georgia State, defeated Alejandro Beneyto Sanchez of Jacksonville State 7-5, 2-6, 1-0(5) in the opening round of qualifying singles hosted by the University of Alabama.

Lazo, however, lost his second match of the day 6-3, 6-1 to Louisiana’s Alejo Ferrer Chueca. Seth Richey also fell in the first round to Espen Lagarde of New Orleans 6-1, 6-3.

Lazo and Richey will join forces in doubles action on Friday at 3 p.m. against UAB’s Kaustubh Holcomb and Vojtech Podzemny. At 4 p.m., Gregor Ramskogler and Benito Sanchez Martinez will team up for the first time to take on Matthew Armbruster and Lillian Dubois of New Orleans.

Carles Hernandez and Nemanja Malesevic team will together for the first time since April 17 when they meet the UAB duo of Georgios Nouchakis and Athanasios Spyropoulos at 5 p.m. Newcomers Petar Jovanovic and Ewen Lumsden pair up against Lachlan Brain and Chris Zhang of North Alabama to close out the first round of doubles at 6 p.m.

Malesevic – ranked 52nd in singles – along with Lumsden, Hernandez, Jovanovic, Sanchez Martinez and Ramskogler are all part of the singles main draw at the event with Malesevic, Lumsden and Hernandez all receiving a first-round bye.
