Lady Vols Reflect on Stellar Season, But Aren’t Done Yet

KNOXVILLE, Tenn – The No.15 seeded University of Tennessee Women’s Tennis team is gearing up for the biggest stage of the year as they prepare to host Regionals for the 2023 NCAA Tournament this weekend. With a record of 19-5 (11-2 SEC) on the season, the Lady Vols are looking to make a splash on the national stage.

Led by the SEC Co-Coach of The Year and VFL Alison Ojeda, who is in her seventh season at the helm of the program, the Lady Vols have worked tirelessly all season to prepare for the tournament. With a mix of experienced veterans and talented young players, the team has shown steady improvement throughout the season and is peaking at the right time.

Coach Ojeda has been pleased with the progress of her team this season and believes that they have what it takes to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

“Yeah, it’s a big credit to the girls because I know what it takes to get to this point,” Ojeda said. “So, it comes down to whether or not the girls are willing to do what it takes to put themselves in a position to win tennis matches. And they have, they did all the work that you want to do in the summer and the fall and then the spring, but with that said the girls have done a great job and now we’ve got an opportunity to make a run, but we’ll take it one match at a time.”

Two standout players, Rebeka Mertena and Elsa Tomase, who were both named to the All-SEC First Team, are leading the charge for UT.

Mertena, a fifth-year senior from Latvia, has had an impressive season thus far, with a 19-12 record in singles matches and a 16-10 record in doubles matches. Her talent and determination on the court have made her a valuable asset to the team and have helped to secure several crucial victories throughout the season.

Tomase, a sophomore from Latvia, has also had a standout season, with a 12-12 record in singles matches and a 7-6 record in doubles matches. Her precision and focus on the court have helped her to consistently perform at a high level, earning her the admiration of her teammates and coaches.

The Lady Vols will face tough competition in the tournament, as they will be up against some of the best teams in the country. However, with their talent and determination, the Lady Vols have a real chance to make a statement at home.

As the team prepares to take the court this weekend, the entire University of Tennessee community is rallying behind them. Students, alumni, and fans are all excited to see what this…
