Lady Vols Close Out UT Home Invitational

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women’s tennis team wrapped up its fall slate claiming seven victories on the final day of the UT Home Invitational on Sunday at Barksdale Stadium.

Lauren Anzalotta and Sofia Cabezas secured the Lady Vols’ only doubles victory of the day with a 6-1 win over Margaret Navarro and Blanca Pico Navarro. Esther Adeshina and Catherine Aulia came up short and were defeated by Nicole Kiefer and Melodie Collard, 3-6.

“I am proud of these girls,” said associate head coach Matias Marin. “This tournament has been tough but we competed until the end. These types of matches gave us great exposure to great opponents.”

In singles, Tennessee put together six wins to cap off the afternoon. Alana Wolfberg made quick work and defeated Makayla Mills, 6-4 and 6-2. Aulia also got into a rhythm as she took care of Maialen Morante, 6-3 and 6-1. Eleonora Molinaro landed 6-2 and 6-0 wins against Dani Schoenly, while Adeshina notched two 6-4 wins over Leena Bennetto. Cabezas and Anzalotta both took their opponents into three sets. Cabezas came out on top 6-3, 3-6 and 6-4 against Zoe Hammond while Anzalotta held on to win 6-1, 4-6, and 7-5 to Ellie Myers. Elza Tomase was defeated by Lizzy Stevens 6-3 and 6-4.

“From where we ended the tournament to where we started in the fall, all across the board we are so much better,” head coach Alison Ojeda added. “In terms of what we have done over the last couple of months, we certainly have improved.”

Tennessee returns to the courts for its first spring match of the season against Furman at 1 p.m. on Jan. 14 at Barksdale Stadium.
