Nick Kyrgios pulled out of his Tokyo quarterfinal with Taylor Fritz on Friday, citing a left knee injury.
The Aussie, who is 37-10 on the year, says he wants to protect the knee so he can perform his best for his two remaining events this year, which are ATP Basel and the Paris Masters.
“It’s the better option for my body. I have to be smart and after hitting with Thanasi today I feel that this is the best thing to do. I have a couple of tournaments at the end of the year and wanna do well there,” he said, according to Jose Morgado.
Kyrgios confirms it’s his usual knee injury.

Kyrgios, who also pulled out of his doubles semifinal with partner Thanasi Kokkinakis, remains on the outside looking in when it comes to reaching this year’s ATP Finals in Turin.
He is 990 points behind the last spot, and only has a shot at picking up 1500 points between now and the end of the season.
No matter what happens it has been a fantastic season for the Aussie, who reached his first major final at Wimbledon where he was the first unseeded Grand Slam finalist since 2008, won the Citi Open title and also claimed the Australian Open doubles title with Kokkinakis.
He currently sits at No.20 in the ATP rankings, 73 spots higher from where he started the season.
