NEW YORK – Sun Devil Men’s Tennis freshman Constantinos Koshis (Cyprus) reached the main draw of the US Open Juniors today with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Manfredi Graziani (Switzerland). It’s the second qualifying-draw victory for Koshis following a 3-6, 6-5, 1-0 over Marko Mesarovic (USA) yesterday in the tournament opener. Koshis will play Michigan State freshman Ozan Baris (USA) in the first round Sunday.
Koshis’ Juniors run follows sophomore Murphy Cassone and alumnus Michael Geerts’ runs in the men’s singles bracket last week. Cassone and Geerts both lost their first round matches. ASU had another Junior playing this week in Chelsea Fontenel on the women’s side. Fontenel is a freshman this year for Sheila McInerney‘s women’s team. Sun Devil standout and three-time Grand Slam champion Desirae Krawczyk is still alive in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles brackets.
Koshis has had an impressive last two years in junior competition. He came into the week with Junior Tournament experience from Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the Australian Open. In the AO, he picked up a pair of victories before being eliminated.
