Kayla Wilkins Wins Against UCLA


TUCSON, Ariz. – #45 Arizona fell 1-6 in a tough 3.5 hour battle against #26 UCLA at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on Friday, April 7. 

Despite dropping the doubles point, the ‘Cats held their own on courts one and two. Salma Zioiuti and Reece Carter led 3 games to 1 before Ava Catanzarite and Sasha Vagramov tied it up at 3-3. The Wildcat duo won one more game before their match was left unfinished at 4-5. Arizona tandem Parker Fry and Kayla Wilkins battled the 12th ranked doubles duo in the country, Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle at one doubles. Fry/Wilkins were back and forth with the Bruins when they dropped their match 4-6 to give UCLA the first point of the day. 

It was a lengthy stint in singles that saw all but one match split for three sets. Wilkins gave Arizona its only point of the day when she defeated Vagramov 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 at four singles. Freshman Carter won her first set 6-3 against Fangran Tian, who is ranked #17 nationally, then fell 3-6, 2-6 in the final two sets. UCLA clinched the match on court three after Midori Castillo fell 6-3, 3-6, 1-6 to #122 Catanzarite. 

Women’s Tennis is now 14-10 heading into their seventh conference match of the season against #29 USC on Saturday, April 8 at 12 p.m. MT.
