STILLWATER, Okla. – Duke redshirt senior Garrett Johns and sophomore Pedro Rodenas concluded their time at the 2024 NCAA Singles Championship on Monday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
No. 21 Johns fell, 6-3, in his opening frame against No. 24 Tyler Zink of Oklahoma State. He then battled back in the second set and the foes were knotted at 6-6 but it was Zink who came out victorious in a tiebreak, 10-8, to claim the 7-6 overall win.
Later in the day, No. 43 Rodenas dropped a three-set decision to No. 26 Karlis Ozolins of Illinois. Ozolins earned a 6-3 win in the opening set, but Rodenas fought back to register a 6-2 victory in the second to force a decisive final frame. Unfortunately, Ozolins would rebound for the 7-6 (1) tiebreak win in the third set to record the overall victory.
Duke’s time in Stillwater is not over though as Johns and Rodenas will team up in doubles play beginning Tuesday. The No. 1 overall seed in the tournament will match up with No. 20 Casey Hoole and Toby Samuel of South Carolina at 4:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. CT) in their opening-round match.
