CHARLESTON, S.C. – Redshirt-senior Garrett Johns and sophomore Pedro Rodenas concluded action in the ATP Charleston Challenger on Thursday. Johns represented the United States in the main draw, while Rodenas competed for Spain in the qualifying rounds.
In the opening round of the main draw, Johns defeated Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (4), to advance to the round of 16. In his second match, the Atlanta, Ga., native, was bested by Denis Kudla of USA, 6-3, 6-3, to close out singles play.
Johns also competed in doubles with his partner, Ryan Peniston of Great Britain, but fell in the round of 16 to Great Britain’s Luke Johnson and Skander Mansouri of Tunisia, 4-6, 7-5, 10-3.
Rodenas defeated Nathan Ponwith of USA after a three-set battle in the first qualifying round. After dropping the first set, 7-6 (5), Rodenas rebounded with back-to-back victories at 6-1, 7-6 (5) to claim the win. The sophomore advanced to the final qualifying round to face Mexico’s Ernesto Escobedo, but dropped in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision.
