CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior Emma Jackson, who is ranked No. 41 nationally, registered a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Susanna Maltby of North Carolina on Friday to move on to the singles quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Sectionals, which is being contested at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
Jackson, who hails from La Grange Park, Ill., will next face South Carolina’s 10th-ranked Sarah Hamner for a spot in the semifinals on Saturday.
In other singles action, Duke sophomore Shavit Kimchi dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 2-6 decision to Maryland’s Kallista Liu and Ellie Coleman fell, 2-6, 4-6, to Malak El Allami of Columbia.
Blue Devil doubles duo of Irina Balus and Coleman also moved on to the semifinals on Friday with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Peyton Capuano and Michela Moore of Dartmouth. Duke tandem of Jackson and Eleana Yu fell, 1-6, 4-6 to North Carolina’s Theadora Rabman and Tatum Evans.
The 2024 ITA Sectional Championships will have a draw size of 32 for singles and 16 for doubles. From this, six singles players from each section (24 in all) will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists, two quarterfinal playoff winners). Meanwhile, three doubles teams from each section (12) will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the Sectional Championships (champion, finalist, third place).
