SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis teams split a pair of matches this past weekend in Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Fighting Irish opened the weekend with a 5-2 loss against No. 8 NC State and closed the weekend with a 7-0 win over No. 25 Wake Forest. The Irish improve to 12-7 overall and 3-5 in ACC action.
How It Happened – #8 NC State
The first match of the weekend saw the Irish fall in two of the three doubles matches, to two top 20-ranked opponents. Singles play saw Julia Andreach tally an impressive straight-set victory over 9th-ranked individual Alan Smith (6-3, 7-6 (5)). Akari Matsuno notched the other Irish point, earning a 7-5 (8-6), 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
How It Happened – #25 Wake Forest
The second match of the weekend was dominated by the Irish. After not allowing a point in doubles action, the Notre Dame held the early advantage. The Irish won all six singles matches in straight sets. Yashna Yellayi was closed the shutout with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) win at No. 4, to secure the shutout. Andreach knocked off her second ranked opponent of the weekend, defeating #52 Anna Brylin, 6-4, 7-5. Page Freeman notched a ranked with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the top singles flight over #41 Casie Wooten.
