SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team is back in action this weekend as they split the squad and head to two different tournaments.
Six Irish players are under way at the Drobac/Beeman Invitational hosted at Michigan State University. The tournament is played in a mini-dual format where they will play with a teammate in a doubles match and then each player will compete in a match against their opponents. Whichever team wins 2 of the 3 matches will advance in the draw.
Senior Matthew Halpin will partner with freshman Evan Lee and continue a partnership that saw them take out a top Michigan doubles team last weekend. They will open up against a different Michigan team of Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul today. Senior Braden Ho will compete along side sophomore Jameson Corsillo and take on the team of Kenta Miyoshi and Mathis Debru from Illinois. Freshman Noah Becker and sophomore Brian Bilsey will begin play against Luis Kleinschnitz and Vlad Meluta of Toledo.
The other part of the Notre Dame contingent is headed to Tulsa, Oklahoma to participate in the ITA All-American Championships. Seniors Connor Fu and Matthew Che along with sophomore Yu Zhang and Sebastian Dominko will all be in the pre-qualifying draw where play will begin on Saturday in hopes of winning four rounds to advance to the qualifying draw. Graduate student Aditya Vashistha is already in the qualifying draw as a direct acceptance based on his national ranking which sits at #99 to begin the year. His competition will start on Monday. Vashistha competed at the All-American Championships in his undergrad as a sophomore where advanced all the way to the main draw of play after winning four matches in prequalifying and three in the qualifying draw, a feat that is very rare.
