Illini Fall to Cal in ITA Kickoff Weekend Opener

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.  – Fighting Illini women’s tennis suffered a 4-0 loss to No. 19 California on Saturday from Norman, Oklahoma, in ITA Kickoff Weekend action.

While Illinois moved to 3-2 on the season, both losses have been to top-25 ranked opponents.

Cal took the doubles point over the short-handed Illini squad. The Golden Bears’ top doubles squad is ranked No. 14 in the latest ITA rankings and took the 6-0 decision over Illinois’ duo. Cal claimed a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the point.

The Illini won the first set of singles action at No. 1 and No. 2. Heuser dropped her second set on the top court and was the lone match that had advanced to a third set.

After Cal went up 1-0 with the doubles point win, the Bears would win straight-set decisions at No. 6, No. 3, and No. 4 singles, respectively, to clinch the match.

Illinois has a quick turnaround and is back in action on Sunday from Norman, Oklahoma, with a 10 a.m. CT match against No. 23 UCF.
