KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Husky men’s tennis team fell short for the first time this year early this morning at Tennessee’s Goodfriend Tennis Center. Playing on a neutral court, the Dawgs dropped a 4-0 decision to a strong Oklahoma squad that featured three ranked singles players.
Part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend taking part at 15 host sites around the nation, Oklahoma will now play the winner of the second match in Knoxville today between host and 6th-ranked Tennessee and South Florida. Washington (2-1) will now play in the consolation match on Sunday again at 9 a.m. Eastern/6 a.m. Pacific, against the loser of that second match.
The Sooners (5-0) took the doubles point and earned three singles wins in straight sets to clinch the match and suspend the remaining courts. The Sooners were leading on two more courts; Cesar Bouchelaghem was the one Husky in front, as he was at 6-4 and 4-4 in set two against Justin Schlageter at No. 2 singles.
In doubles, Oklahoma’s Mandlik/Han defeated Nedim Suko and Ivan Sodan, 6-2, at No. 2. Then OU’s Martinez/Montsi upset 12th-ranked Dzianis Zharyn and Bouchelaghem, 6-3, at No. 1. Oklahoma also led on court three, 5-2.
Brett Pearson fell at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-3, to Mark Mandlik to make it 2-0 OU. Han-Chih Lin fell short in an attempt to extend his No. 3 match, falling 6-1, 6-4 to Jordan Hasson. Zharyn then lost at No. 1 singles to 91st-ranked Alex Martinez, 6-4, 6-2.
