SEATTLE – With the ITA Northwest Regional fields now down to sixteen in singles and eight doubles teams, UW still makes up a quarter of the field in both. Four Huskies won in singles play and two doubles teams won twice on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals.
The tournament is halfway to completion at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Play will continue through Tuesday when NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship tickets will be punched by the singles finalists and the doubles champions.
In singles play, sixth-seeded Dzianis Zharyn had a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Carlos Ramos Membrives of Saint Ma’y’s. Seventh-seed Cesar Bouchelaghem defeated Oregon’s Ziaz Vanderstappen, 6-2, 6-4. Soham Purohit, a 9-16 seed, beat John Kim of Santa Clara, 6-2, 6-4. And Nedim Suko had a 6-2, 7-5 win over Nikola Keremedchiever, 6-2, 7-5, coming back from 2-5 down in the second set. Ivan Sodan dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match to 9-16 seed Tiago Silva of Pacific.
Top-seeded doubles pair Bouchelaghem and Zharyn first had an 8-0 win over Seattle U. duo Hall/Harrison, and then won their round of 16 match, 8-6, over Kim/Bluett of Santa Clara.
Sodan and Suko had consecutive wins in tiebreakers to reach the quarters. They beat a Sacramento State pair and then upset 5th-seeded Burton/Luemkemann of Oregon, both tiebreakers going 7-4 to the Dawgs.
Rohan Belday and Purohit dropped their round of 32 doubles match, 8-3, to the No. 2 seeds Chang/Wright from Cal.
