Madison, Wisc. – The Nebraska men’s tennis team (9-15) lost in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Championships to the Northwestern Wildcats (19-9), 4-0 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Action started with doubles play as the No. 2 team of Dario Huber and Shunya Maruyama lost to Northwestern’s Simen Bratholm and Brian Berdusco, 6-4. In the No. 1 spot, Victor Moreno Lozano and Nic Wiedenhorn knocked off the Wildcat’s duo of Steven Forman and Felix Nordby, 6-3, to even the doubles portion at one.
William Gleason and Calvin Mueller fell short in their match in the No. 3 spot, 6-3, and the point was awarded to Northwestern.
In singles play, Forman beat Huber in consecutive sets, 6-1, 6-0, to give the Wildcats their second match point. Moreno then fell in a close second-set tiebreaker, 7-3, to lose the match in consecutive sets against Trice Pickens, 6-1, 7-6 (3). Northwestern sealed the quarterfinal victory with a win in the No. 2 spot as Bratholm defeated Maruyama in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
The Wildcats advance to take on Ohio State tomorrow in the semifinals at 11 a.m. CT. Nebraska finishes the season with a 9-15 record.
