After competing with the Big Red for five seasons and earning a spot on the Husker’s top-10 career victories list, Shunya Maruyama is returning to Nebraska as an assistant coach.
“We are really excited to have Shunya on our coaching staff,” Head Coach Peter Kobelt said. “He’s been a great ambassador for our program the last five years as a player and I have no doubt that he will continue to be one as a coach. He knows exactly what it means to be a Husker and what the expectations are here for our program.”
From Nagano, Japan, Maruyama had a decorated Big Red career on and off the court. In his final two seasons, he was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The May 2024 graduate studied psychology and claimed over 130 wins on the singles and doubles courts. Maruyama was voted a team captain for the 2023-24 season, helping lead the team to its first ever Big Ten Tournament Semi-final, and a program-best record since 1990.
“I’m extremely honored to be back here as a part of the Huskers,” Maruyama said. “I’d like to work as hard as I can with the coaching staff and all the players to make this team continue its progress. Nebraska is special and the best place to get better on court, in academics and in life. I truly believe that anything is possible with this team because there is no place like Nebraska.”
