MALIBU, Calif. – Sophomore Alexander Hoogmartens’ run at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships came to an end Monday, as the sophomore was stopped in the singles final round by Peter Makk of USC.
Hoogmartens jumped out to an advantage at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, but was ultimately felled in a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 decision.
Ranked 23rd by the ITA, Hoogmartens knocked off No. 46 Gustaf Strom of Arizona 6-4, 6-3 and No. 45 Tim Zeitvogel of Pepperdine 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, respectively. Makk was slotted at No. 41 heading into the tournament.
Each of the seven Bruins active in singles play picked up at least two wins. Freshman Azuma Visaya and sophomore Giacomo Revelli each knocked off a nationally-ranked foe from USC, beating No. 76 Lodewijk Weststrate in the second round and No. 44 Bradley Frye in the third, respectively. Revelli and No. 56 Patrick Zahraj joined Hoogmartens in the round of 16.
Zahraj and Jeffrey Fradkin paired to log two doubles wins, advancing to the quarterfinals. There, the Bruins came up just short against the second-ranked combination of Trojans Frye and Stefan Dostanic 8-6.
