Heuser & Duong Upset No. 1 Doubles Team to Open ITA National Fall Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Kate Duong and Megan Heuser have carried their regional success onto the national stage as the duo upset the ITA’s No. 1-ranked team of Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura (Georgia Tech) to open play at the ITA National Fall Championships.

With the 6-0, 6-2 win, the Illini tandem earned a spot in the Round of 16, which will take place Thursday afternoon with a time still to be determined.

Play from Barnes Tennis Center from San Diego, Calif., will run through Sunday, Nov. 6. Fans can catch all of the action through the Cracked Racquets live stream coverage or through the ITA National Fall Championships Event Page.

The Championships are the grand finale to the fall collegiate tennis season and feature 64 of the nation’s top collegiate singles players (32 men and 32 women) and 64 doubles teams (32 men’s team and 32 women’s teams). The event is in its fifth year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships beginning in 2017.

Duong and Heuser are the first Illini duo to compete in the ITA National Fall Championships since it replaced the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in 2017. The duo became the first Illini to reach the regional finals since Melissa Kopinski and Rachael White in 2012.

The Illinois duo is now 9-2 when working together across all fall competition, including an 8-1 mark in collegiate competition.
