San Diego, Calif. – South Carolina women’s tennis sophomore Sarah Hamner advanced to the quarterfinals in the singles consolation draw at the ITA National Fall Championships on Thursday.
No. 2 Hamner took down No. 74 Malaika Rapolu of Texas in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-4. The Gamecock got off to a slow start in the match, falling behind in the first set, but was able to force the set to a tiebreak where she pulled away to win 7-4. After that Hamner, breezed through the second set, winning it 6-4 to advance.
Hamner will face No. 60 Jaedan Brown of Michigan in the quarterfinals at a time to be announced later. Brown earned her spot at the Fall Nationals after winning the Midwest Regional. She was knocked out of the main draw by Princeton’s Daria Frayman who is ranked No. 3 in the country.
