Grant, Nefve Reach Semis at Commodore Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Four members of the Florida men’s tennis team competed on the second day of the Commodore Invitational and the Gators came away with three wins overall on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Vanderbilt.

The Gators began competition with double’s semifinals after the pairs of Axel Nefve and Will Grant along with Nate Bonetto and Lukas Greif won their first-round matches on Friday. Nefve and Grant put up a strong fight against the Auburn duo of Jan Galka and Alejandro Moreno before falling 7-5. Bonetto and Greif were unable to overcome South Carolina’s No. 37 Toby Samuel and Connor Thomson losing 6-0.

No. 34 Nefve reached the East semifinals of Flight B by topping Texas’ Nevin Arimilli in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The graduate student carried that success into the first set of semis taking it 6-2, but South Carolina’s No. 89 Connor Thomson responded in the following two, 6-4, 6-3 in the battle for the win.

Grant notched a victory in the East quarterfinals of Flight A with a comfortable straight set triumph, 6-3, 7-5, over Ole Miss’ John Hallquist Lithen. The junior faced his toughest test of the tournament against South Carolina’s No. 37 Toby Samuel in the semifinals, but fell short, 6-1, 6-4.

Bonetto bounced back strong in the Flight A North draw semifinal against Vanderbilt’s Michael Ross, 6-3, 6-4. Prior to the win, the sophomore dropped a difficult match with Texas’ No. 98 Siem Woldeab, 6-1, 6-2, in the Flight A East quarterfinals.

Greif fought hard in both of his matches on the day, but wasn’t able to come away with a victory. The senior went down 7-6 (0), 6-4, in the Flight B quarterfinals to Oklahoma’s No. 92 Mark Mandlik and lost to Vanderbilt’s Siim Troost, 6-4, 6-4, in the Flight B North draw semifinal.

The Gators round out the Commodore Invitational tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 25 concluding the tournament with one round of doubles and one round of singles.
