GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The latest installment of the Sunshine Showdown, presented by Fresh from Florida, between Florida and Florida State is slated to take place on Thursday when the Seminoles visit Gainesville for a 4:30 p.m. ET first serve.
SERIES HISTORY
The No. 18 Gators and Seminoles meet for the 65th time in school history on Thursday afternoon, with Florida holding a commanding 59-5 all-time advantage. Last season, the Orange & Blue won all three matchups against their rival, including a 4-1 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on May 8, 2022. In Gainesville, Florida boasts a 35-2 mark against Florida State.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Rachel Gailis was named the freshman of the week following her performance against Baylor on Sunday. Gailis completed a perfect day on Sunday with victories in both singles and doubles competition. Matched-up against Shcherbinina/Thompson of Baylor (RV) in doubles, the No. 58 squad of Spee and Gailis secured a 6-3 win to open the day. Gailis then earned a straight-set, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Danielle Tuhten at the five singles slot to improve to 3-0 in dual singles competition, all without dropping a set in her victories. The freshman also boasts a perfect 2-0 mark in dual doubles matches as well.
ITA RANKINGS
Florida remains at No. 18 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, but welcomed five individuals into the singles rankings. Carly Briggs leads the way, ranked 55th, while Sara Dahlstrom (76) Alicia Dudeney (97), Anastasia Sysoeva (104) and Emily De Oliveira (118) also earned rankings.
ON THE RISE
With five athletes ranked in the latest ITA singles poll, Florida has the largest contingent of Gators present in the poll since the final rankings of the 2017 season when they ended with six. The 2017 team captured Florida’s last national title.
LAST TIME OUT
Florida women’s tennis earned an impressive victory on the road at Baylor on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Bears, 6-1, in Waco. After claiming the doubles point, the Gators wasted no time in tallying victories, with Sara Dahlstrom earning a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win, followed by a dominant performance from Emily De Oliveira on court six. Freshman Rachel Gailis played clincher for the Gators, winning a 6-4, 6-4 match on court five to secure the victory.
