GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida men’s tennis has added graduate transfer Magnus Johnson to its 2023 class, head coach Bryan Shelton announced on Thursday.
“We couldn’t be more excited to add another outstanding young man to our squad,” said Shelton. “Magnus is driven and an extremely smart young man who will continue to blossom at Florida. His experience playing number one at Florida Gulf Coast is invaluable and we expect great things from him as he adds to our strong culture.”
Johnson, the only player in Atlantic Sun Conference history to win ASUN Conference Player of the Year three straight times, brings extensive experience playing at the top doubles and singles spot for FGCU. Johnson went 18-4 overall this spring and an undefeated 7-0 in conference play. In doubles, he finished the season 21-10 overall and 4-2 in conference. Overall, Johnson compiled a 56-18 singles record and 43-24 doubles record during his FGCU career.
A native of Naples, Fla., Johnson was ranked as high as No. 71 in the ITA’s Singles Rankings this season and holds a career-high ranking of 65th in the country. With the Eagles, Johnson became just the second player in program history to qualify for the NCAA Singles Tournament after earning the ASUN’s automatic qualifier in 2021. He was also the co-winner of the 2021-22 Eagles Club Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year award and named the ASUN Freshman of the Year in 2021.
In the classroom, Johnson majored in management with a concentration in sports management and carries a 3.95 cumulative GPA, while being named to the Dean’s and President’s Lists throughout his FGCU tenure. On May 1, he claimed the Kavanagh Eagle Scholar-Athlete Award, the highest honor FGCU bestows upon a graduating senior student-athlete and recognizes the ability of the winner to combine athletic and academic successes with leadership and community service, as well as demonstrated leadership within their peer group. In addition, Johnson was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete selection the past two seasons, and has twice earned ASUN All-Academic Team honors.
In the community, Johnson has volunteered over 250 hours, including with Special Olympics Florida, the Naples Therapeutic Riding Center, and New Hope Ministries. He has also served on the Athletics Health & Wellness Committee. Additionally, Johnson was a valued member of the E.A.G.L.E.S Leadership Institute 2021-22 cohort.
