Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis completed its first day of action at the Gamecock Shootout on Friday. The team had a strong showing in doubles on the day with both Gamecock pairs coming out victorious.
Graduate Elise Mills paired with junior Sarah Hamner and the duo proved to be an efficient pairing. They faced Virginia’s Tech’s Katie Anderini and Dariya Radulova and claimed the victory in a near shutout 6-1 result.
Juniors Misa Malkin and Olympe Lancelot teamed up for South Carolina’s other doubles match. The duo got off to a rocky start after giving up a break on their first service game but battled back to tie things up and send the match to a tiebreaker. The breaker was all Gamecocks with Malkin and Lancelot coming out on top 7-6(3).
In singles, Lancelot claimed a solid win over Marshall’s Doroteja Joksovic 6-4, 6-3. The Lyon, France, native is now 4-2 in singles on the season.
Malkin fell in a tight match to Marshall’s Johanna Strom. Strom claimed the first set but Malkin battled back to take the second. The final set was close but it was Strom who earned a late break to win it 6-4.
Freshman Anna Kantor also saw her first action in singles since sustaining an injury in the season-opening tournament, falling to Marshall’s Aisling McGrane 3-6, 3-6.
The Gamecocks will continue action on Saturday with one more round of singles followed by one round of doubles. Singles will begin at 10:00 a.m. with doubles to follow at approximately noon. Live streaming will be available here.
