AUBURN, Ala. – Two Mississippi State freshmen picked up a pair of wins during the first day of qualifying at the ITA Southern Regional Championships on Thursday.
Marshall Landry tasted victory in his collegiate debut to start the day. The former four-star recruit fell behind UAB’s Theo Mottier 4-6 after the opening set but bounced back for a 6-0 shutout in the second and then won a 10-8 super tiebreaker to take the match.
Landry’s second-round match in the early afternoon also went to three sets. He won the first set 7-5 but Louisiana’s Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez evened things with a 6-2 victory in the second. Sanchez Gonzalez went on to outlast Landry 10-8 in a third set super tiebreaker to advance.
Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes received a first-round bye and moved on after his dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over UAB’s Iker Dellien. It was Ferrer Guimaraes’ second victory of the fall. He will face Louisiana’s Oriol Fillat Gimenez in the third round on Friday at 9 a.m.
The main draw of doubles also gets underway on Friday afternoon. Nemanja Malesevic will make his fall debut when he teams with Landry against Vanja Dobrnjac and Lucius Soller of Jacksonville State at 3.
Ferrer Guimaraes joins Dusan Milanovic to take on Nazar Fedoryshyn and Izan Orgiles of North Alabama at 3:30 while the tournament’s second-seeded team of Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez meets Fillat Gimenez and Sanchez Gonzalez of the Ragin’ Cajuns.
